Questions

How do I work out the pitch change between two tracks?

Divide the BPM of the track that is playing by the BPM of the incoming track and subtract one. 126 over 122 is 1.033, so the incoming track needs about +3.3 % on the pitch fader.

How far can I pitch a track before it sounds wrong?

Within 2 % nobody notices. Up to about 4 % is easy, 6 % starts to change the feel of vocals and basslines, and 8 % is the practical limit even with key lock. Past that, cut between the tracks or mix over a break.

What is half time and double time?

A track at 70 BPM has the same pulse as one at 140, with every other beat accented. The calculator checks the incoming tempo doubled and halved and uses whichever is closest, so a 174 drum and bass track lines up with an 87 one.

What does a ±8 % pitch range mean?

The pitch fader can move the tempo 8 % either way. A 124 BPM track can play anywhere from 114.1 to 133.9 BPM. Many controllers let you switch between ±6, ±8, ±10, ±16 % and wider.

Does Setboard use the same numbers?

Yes. Setboard grades the tempo of each transition with the same bands, and its transition preview pitches the incoming track up to 8 % and cuts cleanly beyond that.
